Community Mural

Students are creating a collaborative mural piece on their extra art day (Monday art rotation). Students are looking at art by famous artist, Faith Ringgold, and we are discussing how she created quilts, paintings and sculptures by incorporating pictures of where she grew up and family. On the smart board, students are looking at one of her most famous quilts, Tar Beach

Faith Ringgold: born 1930 (85 yrs old)
                         African-American artist

As a class, we are talking about what it means to be a community. Community is a big word we use a lot in kindergarten and at MECC. Classroom teachers also cover a community project in their classroom, so this art project will be a great connection for the children.

Each Monday rotation week will do a different part of the mural. For example, week 1 students might be creating the houses. Week 2 the border and week 3 the background with people.

Since I was only at school for 1 Monday before going into labor, Mrs. Spires will be finishing the mural project with the other 2 Monday rotation day classes. Below are some pictures Mrs. Spires sent to me. The murals are looking amazing!!! I will add more pictures when the students from next Monday create their part.
