Pop Art Self-Portraits

2nd grade artists are learning about Pop art and creating a self-portrait on 12x18 paper. They watched a 22 minute movie on three Pop artists for inspiration: Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. We discussed appropriate proportions of the face: location of features, etc. and the children are doing an amazing job! After taking 1 1/2 classes to draw their self-portrait, children are tracing their portrait in black Sharpie.
Then, artists are using the Primary Colors to paint their self-portrait, but only painting the background 1 color, their hair a different color and their shirt the last color. When the paint is dry, the children will use skin color markers to add dots to the face just like famous artist Roy Lichtenstein. I will update pictures each week as we go...

Jim Dine Hearts

Kindergartners are being introduced to Cincinnati based artist, Jim Dine on their Monday rotation/extra art day. Dine is 79 years old, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, went to UC and Ohio University and is a Pop artist. Children will look at some of his heart paintings and we will discuss what they see. Children will create their own heart art using oil pastel and watercolor paint. They will use a heart shape tracer for the large heart then draw a smaller heart on the inside of it free hand. They will include a pattern in or around their heart and use other various lines learned this year.

Out Monday afternoon

I am out Monday afternoon. After 10 days off, you'd think sickness would be gone, but somehow my 18.5 month old got strep. My mom watched her this morning and took her to the doctor and I'm home with her this afternoon (since my mom had to get back to work). Hopefully she will be better tomorrow and can get back to the sitter since she will be on meds for 24 hours. My sub today is Mrs. Sojda.
If my daughter isn't better by tomorrow morning, my husband will stay home and I will be back at school.
I miss all of the children so much and cannot wait to see their excited, happy, smiling faces and receive hugs.
I'm ready for a normal week! Whew.

In case you were wondering...

In case your child came home last week or comes home this week and mentions I was not at school, below is a quick explanation to why...

Last week I was out Thursday and Friday, today I was out in the AM and Thursday I will be out in the PM. I had surgery last week that was unexpected and while I'm feeling much better, a full day was too much for me yesterday, so that is why I was out this morning. I have a follow up doctor appointment Thursday, which is why I will be out in the afternoon.
Last week, the children continued with the cityscape lesson thanks to my wonderful sub, Mrs. Sojda. She is in the building weekly, possibly daily, so a lot of the children have a rapport with her. This week, Miss Zimmerman will be filling in for me when I can't be here and will continue to finish their cityscape.

Cityscapes

Last week, kindergarten artists learned what a cityscape was (a picture of a city). We looked at pictures of downtown Cincinnati and talked about some of the buildings and their shapes. Then, we discussed how some roof tops were different and not all flat/straight across.
Children chose from using black or light blue 12x18 construction paper for their background then chose 5 or 6 rectangles in various colors for their buildings/skyscrapers. Then, children changed the rooftops of 2 or 3 of their buildings to show variety. Finally, they glued their buildings to their 12x18 paper. They will finish their cityscape by gluing windows to their buildings and drawing a sky.
Kindergarteners are doing a great job being in control of their glue bottle, holding at a diagonal and using our "Just a Dot, Not a Lot" method.

Art to Remember Legacy Tiles

Kindergarten Art to Remember Legacy Tiles were installed over the weekend. They are located close to the art room; just around the corner (before you get to the art room). I still need to paint the boards the tiles are installed on, but they look great so far!

2nd grade Art to Remember tiles are installed diagonally from the 2nd grade art room.

Kindergarten-There were only 5 vertical tiles, so they had to be displayed separately from the horizontal tiles. I'm still in the process of painting the wood they are attached to.

Pinch Pots

If your child hasn't brought home his/her pinch pot, please don't be alarmed. I have Darling AM and Morgan PM in a display case across from the library and I am holding onto Egner AM and Haberstroh PM for the Kindergarten art show in April.
