This week, kindergarten students created a tissue paper collage. This project was a great review from making a mixed media collage last week. The tissue paper collage is part of the Art to Remember(information coming soon) project. The tissue paper does stain the fingers a bit, but since the project took the entire art time, children did not have time to wash. I do try to allow time for washing or at least a wet wipe, but this week just didn't allow. Next week, the children will be drawing on top of their collage.
I created a "password" on the art room door. Every project I will put a new password on the door and the children have to touch and say the password on their way out of the art room. Collage was our password last week and this week. Putting up a password will help children remember one of the many vocabulary words used in the art room. You can ask your child what the password this week was!
I am a Visual Arts Specialist at the Mason Early Childhood Center. I teach all kindergarten students (roughly 560 students) and 4 Autism class/SCSF (Social Communication School Fundamentals) and 2 Resource Room classes. I see kindergartners once a week for 30 minutes. We have a rotation on Monday's, so once every three weeks I will see your child 2x that week. Monday rotations are only 25 minutes long.

Collage
Kindergarten students learned about collage and created their own using paper pieces, popsicle sticks, wood and foam shapes and glue. It was a great no-fail lesson for the children. Children were introduced to glue (special art room glue as I told them) and I discussed how to use glue the correct way: holding at a diagonal and giving a little squeeze so they get "just a dot, not a lot!" It was really cute to hear the children say that phrase while working.

Kindergarten Art Classroom Rules
Kindergarten students helped create the rules for the art room. After discussing what we should and should not do, we came up with:
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Take care of others.
3. Take care of the art room and materials.
4. Try your best.
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Take care of others.
3. Take care of the art room and materials.
4. Try your best.
Each child "signed" the art room contract with a finger print. This is displayed on a bulletin board with the rules. If a child breaks a rule, they will get 1 reminder. If a child needs more than 1, they will go to the calm down/thinking bag until they are ready to try again. They will show me they are ready by showing me a thumbs up. (I don't expect this to happen very often; art is a ton of fun and the children are extremely motivated and excited.) I also explained that they could choose to go to the bag on their own if they get frustrated during art.
2nd Grade Romero Britto
2nd grade students learned about artist Romero Britto. Britto is a Brazilian-American
painter and sculptor and uses vibrant colors and bold patterns. Students will be creating a vase of flowers inspired by Britto and also understand the difference between geometric and organic shapes in this lesson. I will be using this project for Art to Remember (more information soon). We looked at tulip and rose flowers, talked about the shape of them and how they could be drawn. We decided to start with the letter U. After the children drew 3 flowers, they created a large vase, added stems and leaves, divided the vase into 4 parts and added a horizontal line for the table. The drawing will be traced in Sharpie then colored with Sharpies. The background will be watercolor and the table will be an implied texture.
