Welcome to Art with Mrs. Varda!

My name is Sarah Varda and I will be your child’s art teacher this year! I will be teaching art to all of kindergarten along with three 2nd grade classes.

  • For kindergarten, your child will come to art once a week for 30 minutes (same day and time each week with the exception of Mondays which are a rotation day and only 25 minutes).
  • For 2nd grade, I will be teaching art in the 2nd grade art room and your child will come to art once a week for 40 minutes (same day and time each week; Monday rotation day is also 40 minutes).

Many fun and exciting things will happen in art throughout the year. In this blog, you will read and see what your child is learning in art: artists, art history, materials being used and their art projects.

Some of the basic art concepts introduced to your child this year will include: line, shape, color, texture, and pattern. We will build upon these concepts throughout the year and will be discussing various artists as well as the role art plays in our everyday lives.

If possible, please do not send your child to school in their nicest clothes on art day. Some of the paint we use could stain your child’s clothes and other materials are quite messy. Therefore, please provide your child with his/her own art shirt to use (2nd grade, it is up to you whether you want an art shirt or not, but I recommend having one). For example, anything old, an over-sized t-shirt that you would wear to do yard work works best since it is easy for your child to put on and take off independently. An apron will work too. The art shirt will remain in your child’s backpack on non-art days so they do not forget to take it out when your child's classroom teacher reminds them.

For assessment and art show purposes, I will be holding onto your child's art until March or April. I know this will be difficult for you and your child, especially because they will be so proud to show off their masterpiece, but please know that their art will be safe. Paper portfolios have been made to keep their art safe. This portfolio is what they will bring their art home in when ready.

If you need to get a hold of me, email is the quickest way. I check email at home and can get back to you in a timely fashion. Sometimes when messages are left on voicemail, it is very difficult to hear all of the message/contact info, etc. If you do need to call, I am available from 2:55-3:25, which is my planning time.
